Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos

The Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos was inaugurated in 1969 and is considered one of the most significant in Crete. It houses collections of very important archaeological findings from the entire region of eastern Crete, extending from Malia to the distant Zakros.

Museum of Rare and Endemic Plants “Rodanthi”

The collection of the Rodanthi Museum in Kritsa features various groups of plants which include some of the rarest plants of Crete that have been used for thousands of years in the Cretan diet. Moreover, those plants have been serving medicinal and other everyday purposes. Among the exhibits we find marine fossils of large mammals and plants which provide a timeline of the natural history of Crete which dates back millions of years.

Kritsotopoulas museum

At the very heart of the village of Kritsa we find the actual house of Rodanthi, who is also known as “Kritsotopoula”, which houses the “Folk Museum of Kritsotopoula”. Rodanthi was the daughter of the priest of Kritsa and in 1817 she managed to free herself from Hursit Pasha who had taken her as his wife by killing him. She then fled to the mountains dressed as a young man and joined the rebel group of Lasithi Plateau. She fought under the name of Spanomanolis against the Turks and she was wounded during one of the fiercest battles of that time. Her wounds force her to return to Kritsa where her real identity was revealed and she passed away. The numerous exhibits of the museum provide a testimony of the everyday life of that era.

Folklore Museum of Neapoli

The Neapoli Folk Museum occupies a historic building of the 19th century (1870) which used to house the high school of Neapoli. The museum was founded in 1979 following numerous donations and its collection includes pictures, wood carvings, household utensils and objects which were used in the everyday life back in the 19th century. Thus, visitors have the opportunity to get in touch with the reality of the life in Mirabello from that era until more recent years.

Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos

The Folk Art Museum of Agios Nikolaos was established in 1978 by the Cultural Association of Eastern Crete. It is located in one of the busiest streets of Agios Nikolaos, next to the Tourist Information Bureau in Lake Voulismeni.

The Museum houses authentic items of Cretan art and reflects the island’s old traditional life. This unique collection mainly consists of traditional textile handmade items, with incredible embroidery and designs. The Museum also houses holy icons, wooden artifacts, and manuscripts.

Archaeological Museum Of Sitia

he Archaeological Museum of Sitia contains the most important discoveries from eastern Crete. Apart of the exhibition halls, the museum has storerooms and workshops, as well as offices for scholars and the staff. The explanatory labels of the exhibited finds are written in five languages. The museum opened to the public in 1984.

The gold and ivory statue “kouros” from the Minoan town of Palaikastro in Sitia, The rhyton (libation vessel) in the shape of a bull, with painted decoration, the stirrup jar from the Minoan settlement on the islet of Pseira, the pithoid jar from the Palace in Zakros and more!

Archaeological Collection Of Ierapetra

The museum was founded at the end of the 19th century, during the Turkish occupation of Crete and was housed in several buildings in the past. Today it is housed in the building of the Commercial Ottoman School, which is protected by a preservation order, and has been ceded to the Ministry of Culture by the Municipality of Ierapetra.

As soon as it was finally decided that the Museum would be founded in the two-storey building in Myrtia, Yiorgos Anemoyannis set off on his “odyssey” to collect the material. He collected first editions of books, as well as texts published in literary magazines and newspapers. He drafted a list based on which he asked close friends and relatives, old bookshops, archives and libraries for notebooks that Kazantzakis kept as a student, as well as scrapbooks, personal items and letters.

Historical Museum of Crete - Heraklion

Starting from early Christian times, the Historical Museum of Crete presents the turbulent history of the large Mediterranean island up until the mid-20th century. As an orientation area over this long period of fascinating changes, the Museum’s introductory room offers visitors basic information on the main historical phases on Crete, making use of artifacts, maps, books (some of which can be leafed through on the spot via ipad), and images typical of each era.

The Museum 'LYCHNOSTATIS' is an autonomous private Foundation, operating since June 1992.


The museum has its origins in a private collection formed over a period of thirty years by Yiorgos Markakis , professor of opthalmology, lecturer and writer.
The vast work of construction was carried out in seven years (1986 - 1992) by all 5 members of the Markakis family and 3 local workers , in a volunteer basis , together with a bank loan. The buildings themselves are some of the main exhibits.

The Menelaos Parlamas Museum of Rural Life & Theano Metaxa-Kanakaki Weaving Collection, housed in a 19th-century stone-built olive mill and house (donated by the Parlamas family), was founded by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies in 1988.
The Museum Collections are organised thematically (wine press, raki still, oven, agricultural implements, Cretan house, smithy, cooper’s shop, carpenter’s shop, olive mill, weavings and weaving tools), centered around the Cretan countryside and objects dating from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.
